Cabbage Roll Dinner and Silent Auction
February 15, 2020 brought a winter storm to the Peninsula. We have been accustomed to driving in good
winter weather. In spite of the blowing snow, the Cabbage Roll Dinner and Silent Auction were well
attended and enjoyed by all. There are many members, residents and businesses of the Northern Bruce
Peninsula from Lion’s Head, Ferndale, Pike Bay, Stokes Bay and Miller Lake to thank for their donations to
the silent auction. The following Legion and Ladies Auxiliary members and residents donated:
Linda Cole, Barb and Wayne Morningstar, Dave and Susan Uren, Don and Sharron Colter, Nancy Alleyne,
Wayne Myles, Ken and Jean Diebel, Fred and Jean Van Tooren, Ross and Karin Webb, Tom and Leona
McCarthy, Bob and Karen Winters, Peter Dodge, George Bowman, Cindy Cowley, Alice Sear and Sherill
Sear, Jim and Donna Dowding, Violet Linyard, Sue McCullough, Murray and Barb Mielhausen, Jim Sauve,
Pat Witherspoon, Marydale Ashcroft, Dave and Tamara Reich, Deb Trainor, Joan Harding and Helen
Stewart. We appreciated the following donations from the Lion’s Head, Ferndale and Pike Bay businesses
as follows: the Dandy lion, Aunt Donkey’s, Rachel’s Diner, Hellyer’s Foodland, Scott’s Home Hardware,
Peninsula Pet Supplies, Ferndale Corner Convenience and UPI, Mom’s Pizza, Bear Tracks, Peninsula
Appliances and TVs, Katemma’s Diner, Wilson Home Building Supplies, Owen Sound Peninsula Ford,
Louise’s Hair Care and the Peninsula Pharmacy.
All proceeds from the dinner tickets and the silent auction will be donated to the Legion Accessibility
Lottery Account. Thank you to all who cooked, served, made dessert and donated to the silent auction.
The Lion’s Head Legion Branch members and the area community worked collaboratively to make the
evening a success.
The other excitement for the evening was the red ticket lottery draw for $1,000.00, won by Lorna from
Owen Sound. Congratulations to Lorna for being the lucky winner.
Other News from the February 6, 2020 General Legion Meeting:
- The Branch members welcomed Rodney Johnson from Lion’s Head as a new member.
- There was discussion about a recent scam in the area as a resident of Lion’s Head reported that
she was asked to donate to the Lion’s Head Legion. It should be noted that the Lion’s Head Legion
does not ask for funds or donations over the phone. The OPP reminded us to be aware of scams in
the area and if one is approached on the phone, hang up.
- The Lion’s Head Branch executive has received a copy of the Workplace Violence and Harassment
Procedure that all legions need to follow by law under the Occupational Health and Safety.
- The Branch members thank Rob Taves and Faye who donated six new dart boards to the Legion.
The weekly darts are well attended and the players appreciate the new boards.
- The Legion will donate from the Poppy Trust Fund the following:
- a) District C Hospital Trust Fund
- b) Branch and Ladies Auxiliary Charitable Foundation
- c) Branch and Ladies Auxiliary Bursary program
- d) Homeless Veterans Fund
- e) Operation Service Dogs supported and promoted by Wounded Warriors
Thank you to the community residents who generously donated during the Poppy Campaign.
Donation cheques will be presented by President Richard Smith at the Zone “C” Convention.
Monthly Lottery 50/50 Draw: Amount Won: $50.00 Won by: Steve Waechter
Next Legion Branch Meeting: Thursday March 7, 2020 – Executive at 1:15 p.m.
Next Legion Branch Meeting: Thursday March 7, 2020 – General Membership at 2:00 p.m.
It has been discussed about making the minutes of the meeting available to the membership.
There will be a few copies of the minutes available at the sign-in table for members to read before the
general meeting begins.
Fun Activities are available at the Legion during March as follows:
- Darts on Mondays and Thursdays, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
- Darts for Meat on Saturday March 9th and the 23rd beginning at 1:00 p.m.
- Cribbage on Thursday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
- Friday Night Euchre beginning at 7:30 p.m.
All community members are welcome. You do not have to be a member of the Legion to
participate.
We have the nominations and elections for the 2020-2021 Executive in April. Let an executive
member know if you are interested in holding a position on the executive. Some appointments are
made from the elected Executive Committee. The more members who participate in the executive
positions, the more hands there are to share the work. The Lion’s Head Legion Branch 202 is small but
mighty in carrying out the mandate of the Legion. The mission of the legion is to serve the veterans in
remembrance, to help the veterans and their families as needed, to help and provide programs for
the youth and the residents of the community.
George Bowman says thank you for all of the members renewing their memberships. Across Canada
the legions have received over 30,000 new members this year. Invite a friend, a relative or a
neighbour to join the Legion. Reach out to the veterans in your area and say thank you for your
Military service. It is difficult for the veterans from recent military deployment to settle into regular
life and routines that we enjoy every day, upon their return to their communities.
The Lion’s Head Legion will celebrate a 89th Anniversary in July 2020. We are discussing plans to
celebrate the 90th Anniversary in 2021. How would you like to celebrate and remember the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 202 Lion’s Head? If you have an idea, please share it with an executive
member. Volunteer to be on the planning committee. The first meeting of the first executive took
place at the lighthouse on Knife Island, near Sandy Beach and Stokes Bay on July 4, 1931.
Nancy Alleyne is the Veteran Service Officer and Senior Contact Officer. She can be contacted at 226-
974-2505.
Watch for articles and pictures in the Tobermory Peninsula Press submitted by Peter Dodge, Public
Relations Officer for the Lion’s Head Legion. Peter will include any news or announcements about the
work of the Lion’s Head Legion and its members.
Let me know if your e-mail address changes so that I can keep an updated contact list. The Legion will
not give any of your information to any other organization. Let me know if you want to unsubscribe
to the monthly calendars and newsletters.
