Aria Thomas Places First
at Provincial Public Speaking Competition
Published in The Bruce Penninsula Press #8 30 May 2023

BPDS student Aria Thomas with her award.
Aria Thomas, a Grade 8 student from the Bruce Peninsula District School achieved first place at Legion’s sponsored Public Speaking Competition at the Intermediate school, Legion Zone, District and Provincial Level.

Aria competed over an 8-week period from March to May, taking her from Lion’s Head, to Owen Sound, to Fergus, to Hanover and finally to Stouffville on May 6 to compete against three other finalists to win top honours.

Aria’s 3.5 minute long presentation tells the story of the “History of Witches”. She describes the stigma related to witches through the ages and the frequent prosecution of these women.

Aria was inspired to do research on witches when she landed the role of The Witch in her school play “Into the Woods”. She says in her presentation to the judges “I am super excited to tell you that I recently landed the role of The Witch in our school musical, Into the Woods. I wanted this role so much because I’ve always loved the idea of casting spells, making potions and just being magical.”

Aria says while magic and witches are common in pop culture and “Women are no longer being hung for practicing witchcraft, the negative stigma from these past times remains. Throughout pop culture, films and stories, witches have been portrayed as old, ugly, green and evil. Here’s a fun fact, did you know that the famous book, The Wizard of Oz, was originally banned for portraying a witch as young, beautiful and good? Times have changed a lot since then, so why do you think we still love to hate witches?”

The Legion sponsored Public Speaking competition provincial finals winners in Stouffville, ON on May 6.

Aria makes the plea in her speech that ”it’s time to show some more compassion to all the healers and innocent women who were tortured and murdered for so-called witchcraft.” She ends her speech by inviting everyone to come see the BPDS play.

After her Hanover presentation, Aria headed back to act in the final performance of the school play, thinking the whole time about her results. As soon as the performance ended her mom informed her that she had won and was moving on to the Provincial level.

She describes the experience as lots of hard work but also a lot of fun. She advises other students interested in taking part in the Public Speaking competition to choose a topic they love. Aria says “you have to recite your presentation so many times, you don’t want to get bored.”

Ruck 2 Remember
It was a great honour and pleasure to host the Ruck 2 Remember team at the Lion’s Head Legion from Thursday, July 7 to Sunday, July 10. To begin, I would like to thank Sharron and Don Colter, Susan and Dave Uren, Wendy and Brian Reis, and Mary and Richard Smith for hosting the team and for serving and preparing their breakfasts and supper. It was greatly appreciated by all.

(L-R) Legion President Richard Smith, Lino Di Julio and Joey Dimauro
The Ruck 2 Remember is a registered not for profit that was established to support veterans, police, firefighters and paramedics! The team organizes two major events each year, the annual "Road 2 Recovery" which raises funds for "Operation: Leave the Streets Behind" and the "Canuck Ruck for the Homeless" which is an annual outreach event where the team collects clothing, gift cards, and care packages for the homeless and traverses the city handing them out to those that are most in need.

Additionally, we support other events whose causes overlap with our own by providing man power and leveraging our experience in fundraising and organization. We consider ourselves a workhorse organization.” (Information taken from their website)

This year, the annual Road 2 Recovery is walking the entire Bruce Trail of 900 kilometres starting in Tobermory on July 5 and ending in Niagara-on-the-Lake on August 7. They are supporting “Leave the Streets Behind” which assists Veterans who are homeless. As they walk the Bruce Trail, they will be having breakfast, supper and lodging at 20 different legions along the way. The Lion’s Head Legion is the second legion where they have stayed.

The members of the Ruck team are Lino Di Julio, Joey Dimauro and Dave Ward. Dave is the driver who provides support for the two hikers. Lino told me that he and Joey took some beautiful pictures of this portion of the trail, and met some interesting hikers along the way.

Dave, the driver’s job, is to take the other two men back to the trail after breakfast and pick them up at the end of the day. The driver is also the team’s backup. If one of the hikers needs something, he can contact Dave by cell phone. The driver also does other tasks for the men as required.

One of the questions that I asked Lino and Joey was what training they did to prepare for such a marathon walk. They informed me that they would go out every day and walk the Bruce Trail in the Hamilton area. They also went to the gym and did running on a treadmill carrying 20-pound weights.

One of the reasons for this type of preparation is that these hikers carry rucksacks weighing 50 pounds. The rucksack contains water, food, and other necessities.

As of July 8, the team has raised $75,000 for Homeless Veterans. Lino also told me that the team is sponsored by 20 companies.

If you wish to read further information about Ruck 2 Remember the team has a website. The team also has a Facebook page where you can see parts of the Bruce Trail that the team has walked.

The Big Cheque
The big cheque displays the amount of money that the Lion’s Head Legion will receive from the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility for the Senior Bus Trip to Owen Sound on Wednesday October 16th. The bus trip was paid for by a Senior Community Grant for which Sharron Colter applied for in June and received approval for the funding.

The bus trip included a tour of Caframo in Georgian Bluffs, a visit to Grey Roots Museum to tour the display depicting the history of Firefighting in Grey County. Then the group visited the Owen Sound Legion Branch 6 for a panel, a speaker, entertainment and dinner which was catered by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Bill Walker M.P.P. for Bruce Grey Owen Sound visited the Lion’s Head Legion on Friday, 15 November 2019 to congratulate Sharron Colter for applying for and receiving the Senior Community Grant to benefit the seniors of the Northern Bruce Peninsula. He also thanked the Lion’s Head Legion executive members in attendance for supporting the application to the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility.

Lion’s Head Legion Receives

Ferndale, Lion’s Head & District Lioness Club is once again assisting Lion’s Head District Legion in its efforts to provide accessibility to those in the community who are disabled. For the past year the Legion has been reaching out to the community in order to raise funds for its accessibility program. Earlier in the year, the Lioness club donated $1,000 to help with the project. So far, the Legion has raised enough money to install a ramp and remote-controlled door opener to allow for wheelchair access into the Legion hall. All of the construction work was done by Legion members. The next project will be even bigger. And much more expensive! The new project calls for a building addition to house a wheelchair accessible washroom. This also entails renovating the existing septic tile bed to make room for the addition. The Lioness club holds its monthly meetings in the Legion and is happy to donate another $1,000 to help with this worthwhile project that will support our community.
