The Lion’s Head Legion will be welcoming four new members who are interested in helping the veterans and their families and their community. The Lion’s Head Legion members want to welcome more community members to the Legion for fellowship, for playing cards or sports such as darts in the fall and corn hole in the summer on Thursday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. and euchre on Fridays nights, beginning again in September. There will be community speakers on various topics. The Legion members welcome new Legion and community members as they support, volunteer or attend the special dinners prepared at the Legion.
The Roast Beef Dinner was well attended. Thank you to the 60 volunteers who helped with the dinner, either as a server, a kitchen cook or clean-up crew, dessert table or parking attendants, door greeters, convenors and ticket sellers. A Country Roast Beef dinner requires many helping hands. The funds from the dinner will ensure viability and sustainability of the Legion as fundraising and donations are the main sources of income for the Legion.
The plans for the Fish Fry on Tuesday August 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 are well under way with convenors Barb and Wayne Morningstar. Tickets are now on sale and available by calling Barb or Wayne Morningstar at 519-592-5846 and Sharron Colter at 519-793-3473. The Fish Fry dinner consists of one piece of white fish, one baked potato, corn, coleslaw, bun and butter with sour cream and tartar sauce. You then will have your choice of a generous slice of pie, cheesecake, carrot cake or brownies. Tickets are $25.00 each with tea, coffee or cold lemonade included. Phone if you are available to volunteer. A volunteer sign-up sheet will be available at the Legion or phone the numbers above if you can volunteer. Many volunteers make light work for everyone. Hope to see you there.
On Thursday July 6th, Aria Thomas presented her winning speech at School, Zone, District and Provincial Competition levels. Richard Smith presented Aria with a gift. (See photo sent in an earlier e-mail.)
On Thursday, 3 August at 2:00 p.m. historian Bill Streeter from Southampton will present his research about John Pearson, a resident of the Northern Bruce Peninsula who had the rare honour of receiving the Victoria Cross and other medals during his military career. Branch members are welcome to attend and hear John Pearson’s story from Bill Streeter. Attend the meeting to welcome and support Bill as he shares his research with us. There is a special plaque at the cenotaph in Lion’s Head in his honour. Lest we forget, John Pearson is buried in the Eastnor cemetery.
The Legion is also hosting the Old Schoolhouse Senior Club on Tuesday, July 25 for a spaghetti dinner for $10.00 for members and $15.00 for non- members. RSVP by either phoning Jan Jackson at 519-793-3589 or e-mailing Jan at janjackson@gmail.com. You are welcome to become a member for 2023 – 2024. Memberships are $15.00. A big thank you goes to Tim Hayes for his donations to the club from his Bottle Return Program in Lion’s Head.
The speaker and entertainer will be Jackie Ralph from the Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce Branch with her slide presentation on tips for mental health wellness and her karaoke machine for her singing to us. Jackie presents her information in a fun and humorous manner.
The Bruce Men’s Shed is also meeting at the Legion monthly on the third Saturday starting in August at 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. We wish them well on July 25th at the Pike Bay Community Centre to meet with the Men’s Sheds Ontario Leadership Team.
