The Legion members honour and respect the National Canadian Flag in all of their parades and meetings. Recently, there was an inquiry about the correct protocol and etiquette for flying the National Canadian Flag. Upon further online research and discussion with Legion executive members the information is plentiful for the reader who enjoys researching a topic. For more information a reader can check the Government of Canada page related to the Canadian Flag, the Wikipedia website on the Flag of Canada and information for schools and students such as a trivia game, “How well do you really know about the National Flag of Canada” for students aged 5 to 12. I tried it as an adult and it was a good review for respecting the Canadian Flag.

The National Canadian Flag day is celebrated every year on February 15. This year February 15 occurs on a Thursday. The National Canadian Flag was accepted by parliament on February 15, 1965. There is an article online written for the Government of Canada stating the “Do’s and Don’ts When Displaying the National Flag of Canada.”
Some main points in the article and what happens at the Legion include flying the Canadian Flag always alone on its own flagpole or mast. The National Flag of Canada is lowered to half - mast on occasions when a display of sorrow is called for. Canada has its own rules for Half-masting which the Royal Canadian Legions follow. When the Canadian Flag of Canada is raised or lowered, or when it is carried past in a parade or review, people should face the flag, men should remove their hats and all should remain silent. People are encouraged to replace their faded or torn flag with a new one as soon as they are able. Within the Lion’s Head Legion, the National Canadian Flag is displayed higher than any other flag within the Legion.
Honouring and respecting the National Canadian Flag is a protocol and expectation in all Legions that encourage all members to respect the fallen, living and serving Veterans.
The Lion’s Head Legion continues to welcome new members who are joining the Legion to support the Veterans and their community. A new membership supports all Legion activities, bursaries, youth sports, charitable foundation, cadet corps and Veterans’ care to name a few. Members remember and commemorate those who gave us our freedoms. For more information check online at
