Lion’s Head Legion Ladies Auxiliary
Update: Fall Fling Dance November 8th

28 October 2014

Submitted by Leona McCarthy
Vice-President Ladies’ Auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary October meeting was busy with plans for the upcoming dinners and events. President Jean Shearer opened the meeting and introduced our guest, Irene Surridge, Zone Commander; Margaret Smith, Deputy Zone Commander; Donelda Thede, Past Deputy Zone Commander and Pat Heipel, Secretary of Owen Sound Legion Branch 6.

Meat Pies are being made October 28th and will be ready to be picked-up between 3 and 4 o’clock that day.

The Galt Ladies Auxiliary hosted a Euchre Tournament and our team of Sharron Colter, Kathy Given, Jean Shearer and Anne Aubin placed 6th out of 40 teams. Well Done! Play was delayed as one more player was required and the bus driver, Mr. Ore, was called to duty. Reportedly he had a great time being the only man in 159 ladies.

The Ladies Auxiliary are hosting a “Fall Fling Dance” on Saturday, November 8th from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. A light lunch will be supplied. Come and enjoy music by DJ David Paul. Cost is $7.50 per person or $15.00 per couple.

The Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar will be held on November 22nd. Knitting, Preserves, Sewing, Crafts, Baking and lots more. Come for lunch, stay and shop.

Remember Friday evening Euchre starts at 7:30 p.m. Everyone welcome. $3.00 to play.

Lest We Forget
28 October 2014

Paris is a city where ancient history is found in the old churches and nearly every old building. Many of the most beautiful buildings were former palaces. The Basillica of Sainte Denis is where the Queens of France were crowned. It is also the final resting place of all the kings from the 700&$146;s. Plaques abound on buildings and walls. A plaque on a building opposite the Tuileries Gardens shows where Leon Tolstoy lived. Another plaque commemorates the return of one of Napoleon’s generals. But look closer at the walls and bridges in Paris. There, in granite plaques set into the walls, is a newer story. A story that is told every day to those who wish to look. On the wall near the Place de Concorde sits 5 granite plaques in a row. Each one states that on this spot on August 25, 1944 the person was shot by the Gestapo. What did a 24 year old Pharmacy Assistant do? Flowers were placed under the granite inscriptions near the Place de Concorde on the Anniversary this year. On the ground was a bouquet that says 70 years. It seems that the people of Paris do not forget.

I was going to finish this by saying that we have been so fortunate that no war has been fought on Canadian soil since the war of 1812 – 1814. Today that changed.

Today, 22 October 2014, a radical brought his war to Ottawa and we have two more heroes. Like all true heroes, these are men who would rather remain anonymous. One of them was a 24 year old Reservist from Hamilton. The other was protecting the main door of the Parliament Central Block. He was forced to shoot the radical. We live in a time of instant media so we are aware of their heroism, but what about the names on our Cenotaphs. They should also be remembered as our heroes. I hope that everyone will honour a hero this Remembrance Day. Join us at one of our two Cenotaph’s on November 11th.

We honour our heroes at 9:30 a.m. at the Lindsay Cenotaph (Monument Corners) and 10:45 a.m. at the Lion’s Head Cenotaph.
