President’s Report:
President Fred Van Tooren thanked Karen and Bob Winters for hosting the Super Bowl Party at their residence. It was a huge success. There was a donation of $500.00 from the event and Dave Uren donated $100.00. The next thing to happen will be the Valentines Dinner hosted by Wayne and Barb Morningstar on February 16, 2019 starting at 5:00 p.m.

2019 Legion Membership:
Invite a friend or family member to join the Lion’s Head Legion. Ask for a membership application. A Membership application is available online at Dominion Command website. Let the Legion know if there is a veteran in the community who would benefit by an invitation to join the Legion.

This year, Dominion Command is offering a one year free membership to any veteran who would like to join the Legion as a new member. (See Dominion Command website for Membership – dominioncommand.ca)

The Ontario Government has announced that all Canadian Armed Forces members and Veterans living in the province can enjoy recreational fishing across the province without having to purchase a fishing license this year. The Government memo states, “Today and every day, we should salute the sacrifice and bravery of our service members who have defended and continue to defend the rights and freedoms we enjoy.” For more information call the Natural Resources Information and Support Centre at 1-800-667-1940. Upcoming events at the Legion:
  • The Elections for the new executive will take place at the April General Meeting. Consider standing for a position or helping on a committee. The Legion needs volunteers. Plan to attend the Legion meeting in April to vote for the next executive for 2019-2020. To learn more about the Legion Officers roles and duties check online for the Officer’s Manual 2012. The plans are to update the Manual in 2019 as there have been many changes made at Convention through resolutions.
  • Veteran Service Officer, Fred Van Tooren can be contacted at 519-795-7823. The Veteran Service Officer works with our veterans as the need arises. Let Fred know if there are any veterans in the community who need a call or a visit. The Provincial Veterans Service Officer will be in Wiarton at the Wiarton Legion in April to meet with any veterans who would like some help. The Legion needs a volunteer for this position.
  • The Military Service Recognition Book Program is also asking for a picture and a short description about a veteran for the Volume Vl. There are copies of the five previous volumes available at the Legion. Contact a member of the Legion if you would like a copy to read.
  • Karen Winters, Seniors’ Chair wants to know if a member would like a sunshine call or a visit due to illness. Phone Karen at 519-793-4137.
  • Youth Public Speaking at the Lion’s Head Bruce Peninsula District School will be held on Wednesday, February 27th. There will be 4 first, second and third place prize and speakers who win will receive monetary prizes totaling $240.00, sponsored by the 50/50 Lottery Fund.
  • Friday Night Euchre, at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion is now hosted by the Legion Branch members. Thank you to Werner Moslinger as volunteer at the door. Phone Werner at 519-793-4222 if you can volunteer to make a light lunch for refreshments or help at the door. Volunteers are needed. The Friday Night Euchre has been cancelled for the first two Fridays due to winter weather. Susan Uren or Werner Moslinger will phone card players if euchre is cancelled.
  • Darts on Mondays and Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. Have fun while playing darts. On Thursdays there is cribbage also. Thanks to Fred and Jean Van Tooren for hosting Darts.

Wheelchair Accessibility Fundraiser:
The tickets were sold out for the Valentines Dinner on Saturday February 16th. The April newsletter will update you on the outcome of the Valentine Dinner and the Silent Auction.

Watch for the advertisement for the next planned fundraiser to support the Wheelchair Accessibility initiative at the Legion.
