Special Presentation to the Legion:
A special thank you goes to Fay Mansfield and her family for the donation of the restored picture of “The Bruce in Khaki, the 160th Battalion.” It is fitting to have this picture hanging in the hallway of the Legion in Remembrance of the veterans of the First World War. Many of the men in this picture were the first executive and Branch members of the Lion’s Head Legion. The late Comrade, Rev. Robert (Bob) Mansfield is remembered for his twenty year service as chaplain to the Legion. As thank you for the donation, the Mansfield family received a copy of “The Historical Review of the Lion’s Head Legion Branch 202 from 1931 to 2016.”
Fish Fry Dinner Sold Out: Congratulations Volunteers!!
The Lion’s Head Legion members were busy organizing the food for the Annual Fish Fry on Wednesday August 7th. Thanks go to the many volunteers from the Legion Branch, the Ladies Auxiliary and the community. The Fish Fry was well advertised in the Bruce Peninsula Press and on advertisement boards around Lion’s Head Area stating reservations were recommended. 220 people enjoyed the sold out fish dinner.
Thank you to the community and Legion members who supported this fundraiser for the Lion’s Head Legion. The Legion members do work tirelessly to give back to the veterans and their families, to the community and to youth programs.
New members are always welcome. The membership application form is available on the websites, legion.ca and lionsheadlegionbranch202.ca or from the Membership chair, George Bowman. Invite someone to join the Legion. Military service is not necessary to become a member. Younger veterans returning from active duty are encouraged to join to receive their first year membership free. 2019-2020 membership dues of $50.00 will be accepted in September. Mail your dues to the address above and have a chance of winning your membership free for one year in a draw in December.
On Tuesday September 17, 2019 several members will receive Honours and Awards at the Legion. A Social Meet and Greet will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Pot Luck dinner at 7:00 p.m. The Honours and Awards take place after dinner. Do plan to attend. Uniforms will be worn by members, but if you do not have a uniform, business dress is acceptable.
Items under Discussion and/or Consideration:
- WIFI will be installed in the Lion’s Head Legion.
- Activities were discussed to encourage younger military veterans to join or visit.
- Support for the application to the Ontario Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility for a Bus Trip for 56 members of the Legion and the community to visit the Owen Sound Legion, Branch 06 for speakers, entertainment and dinner if approved. More information to follow, if approved, you may wish to reserve a seat.
- The Legion Lottery fund has donated $100.00 towards the health care of a young grandson of a Pike Bay resident.
- The Legion Lottery fund donated $100.00 to the Senior Summit 2019 as a sponsor. The Senior Summit will be held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on September 24th and 25th. Phone the Active Lifestyle Centre Grey Bruce at 519-379-4898 if you would like to attend either date or both dates. Tuesday night begins at 5:00 p.m. with dinner and a keynote speaker for $50.00. On Wednesday, Septembar 25th, registration opens at 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for $15.00. The day includes a catered lunch with several speakers and a panel until 4:00 p.m. Some of the topics to be addressed are affordable housing for Grey Bruce, talking to your doctor about health care needs and medication, aging and memory challenges, Home and Community Support Services and a keynote, “Power of Kindness in Health Care.”
- If you are interested in the topic of possibilities for “Transportation Options” for the Northern Bruce Peninsula, mark on your calendar, Tuesday September 17, 2019 at the Northern Bruce Peninsula Municipal Building at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to hear about possible options for the residents of the Lion’s Head and Northern Bruce Peninsula areas. A newly created “Community Support Committee” for the Northern Bruce Peninsula is discussing Age-Friendly initiatives. Reserve a space by calling Sharron Colter at 519-793-3473.
- How does the Lion’s Head Legion recruit new members and encourage those members to attend meetings? The Lion’s Head Legion Branch members are exceptional to help at a special dinner but they are absent from the General Membership Meeting on the first Thursday of each month. In a recent correspondence from the Zone C-4 Commander I read that the Lion’s Head Legion is the only Legion in Zone C-4 out of 14 legions that have the meetings in the afternoon.
- Would holding the General Meeting in the evening encourage you to attend a meeting? (Remember you do not have to wear a uniform.)
- Would you prefer a phone call reminder a week before the meeting to encourage you to attend a meeting?
- Would you attend a meeting if someone was able to pick you up and bring you to a meeting? The Meeting ranges from 1 hour to one and one half hours depending on the business to be discussed. Let me know if you have a preference.
Next Legion General Membership Meeting is Thursday September 5, 2019 for the Executive at 1:15 p.m. and for the membership at 2:00 p.m. No uniform required.
